Nestled on the outskirts of Columbus is the county seat of Delaware County, Delaware. Delaware is home to Ohio Wesleyan University, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. In addition to the cultural impact the college has added to the city, residents also enjoy exploring Delaware's many charming book stores, art galleries, antique shops, and live music performances.
While the city was named after the Delaware tribe, Delaware itself was founded on a Mingo Village called Pluggy's Town by Joseph Barber in 1807. After the War of 1812, the city experienced growth as a number of settlers arrived. As the years went on, the city grew even more as Ohio Wesleyan University was founded and railroads were built. During the Civil War, Delaware served as the home base for two union training camps.
Delaware has a number of amazing attractions. The Perkins Observatory offers lessons in stargazing as well as many educational lectures. Winter Street houses many of Delaware's artistic points of interest, including the Arts Castle, which offers numerous art classes. The city also hosts quite a few fairs during the year, such as the Delaware County Fair and the Delaware Municipal Airport Annual Air Fair.
